On return to Gaza in 1996, all had been erased and the stone smoothed over. ¥ Since early in 2001, Palestinian gunmen have shelled JerusalemÕs southern communities from primarily Christian Bethlehem and Beit Jalla; attempting to draw Israeli fire and cause a Christian backlash. ¥ April 1, 2002, dozens of armed Palestinians invaded the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, held the priests inside captive, and began shooting out at Israeli soldiers.
